Riders wanted for Wheels for Meals

Meals on Wheels benefit ride, Oct. 17

Alameda County Meals on Wheels is hosting its inaugural "Wheels for Meals" ride October 17, 2009 with three courses through the beautiful Livermore Valley.

The 15-mile ride is perfect for families and riders who appreciate a gentle bike ride through vineyards and bike paths; a 35-mile ride through vineyards and rolling farm country for riders who want to push themselves a bit more; and a strenuous 67.5 mile ride with lots of climbing and fast descents for experienced riders looking for a challenging end-of-season ride.

Entry fee includes: a T-shirt, a post-ride bbq lunch, route maps, fun rest stops with food and beverages staffed by friendly volunteers, good humor, first aid supplies, radio and SAG support, and a few good coaches riding along [TA's team members] with you for encouragement and safety.

Proceeds from this event will support the six Meals on Wheels programs in Alameda County, providing warm, home delivered meals to homebound seniors every day. However, each delivery brings more than a nutritious meal. The caring check-in reassures seniors and their families that someone will knock on the door every day, and ensure that the senior is living safely at home, where they want to be.

Cycles of Change now a Team Alameda Sponsor

Alameda Point's Cycles of Change is a local program that promotes bicycle riding as basic transportation, offers bicycle education (both riding and mechanic skills) and refurbishes old and unused bicycles to distribute to the community.

Cycles of Change also offers an earn-a-bike program in which participants donate time by staffing the Cycles of Change store, or repairing bikes in exchange for a bike, in addition to many other great programs for the community.

Cycles of Change is always looking for the donation of your old, unused bicycles for their students to repair. Your old garage-clogging clunker can offer a great opportunity to hone bike mechanic skills. To donate a bicycle, see the Cycles of Change website.

Cycles of Change offers Team Alameda members a 10% discount on bike purchases.

Team Alameda Apparel

Team Alameda has added our logo to the Land's End Business Apparel Library. What this means is that you can order any of the many styles of clothing from the Land's End catalog embroidered with the Team Alameda Logo!

And it's not just T-shirts--there are tote bags, windbreakers, dress shirts... All kinds of products that can be customized.

The cost of each garment is the price posted on their website, plus $8.50 to embroider the logo, and shipping. To see the variety of clothing and other items available, please click here. Available customizable apparel is located in the Group Apparel section.

To indicate the Team Alameda logo, Land's End has assigned our team logo a number, 0919358W, so specify that number when ordering.

The Board decided to use the Lands End Business Unit for team apparel for several reasons: there is is no minimum; they are a known manufacturer; they have a simple sizing chart and anyone can place an order whenever they want.

Message from Interim President Peter Deutsch

From the Interim President

By now many of you have heard that there has been a change to the Board of Directors for Team Alameda. John Horton has resigned as President, and I was selected by the Board to serve as Interim President.

On behalf of the BOD, I would like to thank John for his time and efforts over the past few months. One of the issues that he was passionate about was the growth of Team Alameda. After seeing the turn out this past Sunday for the "Second Sunday Slow Ride," I have to say it appears that he was quite successful.

As Interim President, I would like to see this growth continue. In addition, and in accordance with our Mission Statement, I would like us to become more inclusive of riders at all levels and will make every effort to see what can be done to achieve this goal. Please feel free to let me know if you have any suggestions for Team Alameda's continued growth and success. Contact Peter.
